"General Surgery" is a technical discipline that involves general principles (wound healing, metabolic and endocrine response, etc.) along with the surgical treatment of systemic and local problems in the body, and has made an effect on several basic medical branches.

Endoscopic and surgical interventions in goiter (thyroid gland), breast, alimentary canal (esophagus), stomach, small bowel, large bowel, rectum, anus, hernias, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts are in the scope of general surgery.

Due to its wide area of interest, the General Surgery Department works in cooperation and coordination with many other disciplines. A large part of the general surgery patients are cancer cases of several types.

With the social sense of responsibility for improving community health care, screening and detailed follow-up programs are organized for early diagnosis of large bowel and breast cancers in our General Surgery Department.

ENDOSCOPY AND COLONOSCOPY

"Endoscopy", also known as “Gastrointestinal Endoscopy” is the general term for the methods which examine the alimentary canal, stomach, duodena and large bowels. It is not limited to the stomach, but is an applicable method for those who has passed kidney stone. It can briefly be called as ‘gastroscopy.’ The alimental canal, cardia, pylorus and duodena are examined during gastroscopy. Endoscopy has been used especially in examining the digestive system. It is required that nothing be eaten 6 hours prior to the application. Access to the stomach and the duodena is provided through the alimentary canal, which is an 8-10 mm-thick extremely soft canal. The areas thorough which the device is directed are displayed thanks to the camera on the tip of the device, so that the physician can see the inner surface and put forward the diagnosis. During this application the patient’s pulse and oxygen levels are observed. Resection is also possible if necessary. Besides, stooping bleeding and polyp removal are also possible. The application is completed in 3 to 5 minutes.

The application of examining the large bowel on a screen with a fiber optic camera under sedation or anesthesia is called colonoscopy. It is required that the bowel be prepared within 2 to 3 days prior to the application by following a special diet and taking medication. The necessary information is provided by the physician or the medical personnel.
